Air purifier vs humidifier vs dehumidifier: which do you need?

By the BYM Electronics team · Updated 07 October 2026

Short answer: they solve different problems. An air purifier removes dust, smoke and allergens. A humidifier adds moisture to dry air. A dehumidifier removes moisture from damp air. None of them does another's job, and an AC does not purify air either.

Which one do you need?

Can you run them together?

Yes. A purifier and a humidifier, or a purifier and an AC, work fine in the same room. Keep a humidifier a few feet away from the purifier and use clean water, because the fine mist from some humidifiers can be read as particles by the purifier's sensor and can load the filter faster.

Does a purifier help with mould?

It captures mould spores floating in the air, but the mould grows because of damp. Fix the moisture with ventilation, repairs or a dehumidifier first; the purifier is the second step.

One machine for both jobs

If you need purification and dehumidification in the same room, we stock the Sharp DW-J20FM-W Air Purifier + Dehumidifier (₹36,799), which combines a HEPA purifier with a dehumidifier for rooms up to about 550 sq ft.

Frequently asked questions

Is an air purifier the same as a humidifier?

No. An air purifier filters particles out of the air. A humidifier adds moisture. They solve different problems and can be used together.

Is an air purifier the same as a dehumidifier?

No. A dehumidifier removes moisture from damp air; it does not filter fine particles. An air purifier does not change humidity.

Air purifier or humidifier: which is better for a baby's room?

They do different jobs. A purifier reduces dust and smoke particles; a humidifier helps only when the air is dry. Choose based on the problem in the room, and ask your paediatrician if your child has a breathing condition.

Does an AC purify air?

No. An AC cools and recirculates room air, and its mesh filter stops only coarse dust. It does not remove PM2.5.

Does an air purifier reduce humidity?

No. Filtration does not add or remove moisture.
