How often should you change an air purifier filter?

Signs your filter needs replacing
- The filter-change or filter-lock light is on.
- The auto mode runs at high speed for long periods even when the air should be clean.
- The purifier smells musty or of smoke.
- The HEPA filter looks dark grey or black all over (the pre-filter will look dirty sooner; clean it with a vacuum or soft brush every 2–4 weeks).
Why filters wear out faster in India
Filter lifespans are rated for average use. High PM2.5 levels during Delhi and North India winters load filters much faster, so a filter rated for 12 months may need replacing sooner if you run the purifier all day through winter.
Use a genuine filter
Copies may look the same but often use lower-grade media. A genuine filter keeps the purifier's rated CADR and lets the filter-life sensor work correctly on models that detect the filter.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I change my air purifier filter?
Usually every 6–12 months, or when the filter light comes on. Some Philips filters (such as FY2200/30) are rated for up to 3 years.
Can I wash a HEPA filter?
No. Washing damages the HEPA media. Only the pre-filter (where the brand says it is washable) should be cleaned.
Does a used filter still work?
A clogged filter lowers airflow and cleaning speed, and can release odours. Replace it when it's due.
